Distinctive Unit Insignia

Blazon

A silver metal and epoxy device 1-1/4 inches in width overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Azure, a dragon statant with dexter arm raised and wings elevated Or, detailed Brün and langued Gules, a chief invected Argent, bearing a sword enflamed fesswise with point to dexter Proper.  Attached below the shield a tri-parted silver scroll, doubled and bearing the inscription “PREVENT PROTECT RECOVER” in blue.


Symbolism

The shield bears the colors blue and gold which are the chemical branch colors.  The dragon alludes to the World War II Chemical Mortar Battalions that served in Europe. It further represents the use of chemical weapons in World War I and is a mascot for the chemical corps.  The enflamed sword alludes to the United States Army Europe and Africia (USAREUR-AF) sword of freedom, highlighting the unit as the only chemical battalion serving under USAREUR-AF.


Background

The distinctive unit insignia for the 97th Chemical Battalion was approved on 23 January 2024.
